Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome
Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome is an all-weather exhibit inside a 20-metre high glass dome on the roof of The Reef Hotel Casino. Imagine a challenging ropes course set in a wildlife park. You can enjoy this rainforest environment where several different native birds fly freely in the dome. This includes cockatoos, parrots and lorikeets. Most animals also roam free in the park giving the visitors a unique opportunity to observe them in a natural setting and enabling a more personal interaction. In addition to the challenge ropes, there are three zip lines including one that takes you directly over a four-metre crocodile. Head on up to the Dome Climb which offers some amazing views of Cairns including the Coral Sea.
Muddy’s Playground
If you are travelling with children then you should visit Muddy’s Playground. Located on the Esplanade, Muddy’s Playground is open every day of the year from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and it is free! There are many fun things for the kids including Slides, Play Houses, Water Play, and a Flying Fox. But, that’s not all. There are also Climbing Structures, a See-Saw and Puzzle Games. Though the park is not enclosed, there is a special fenced play area for young children to make sure they don’t get lost. When you need something to eat or drink then just head to Muddy’s Café where you can get breakfast, lunch or dinner. Of course, they have a kid’s menu. BBQ facilities are also available to cook your own food.
Cairns Aquarium
Cairns Aquarium is a great place to start and learn about the aquatic life in North Queensland which includes The Wet Tropics and The Great Barrier Reef both of which are World Heritage Sites. There are eleven animal exhibit zones at Cairns Aquarium where you will have an up-close opportunity to experience the wonders of this area. You can watch sharks being fed or if you are really adventurous you can even dive with the sharks. If that is a bit extreme, just get your hands wet in their marine touch tank. Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. There are over 2.900 individual reefs and 900 islands. It is over 2,300 kilometres in length and nearly 350,000 square kilometres in total area. In addition to coral, you will find mangrove trees and seagrass. The Great Barrier Reef is also home to a variety of different sharks. Visiting the reef is usually done by boat and there are several options that depart from Cairns. Cairns Botanic Gardens
The Cairns Botanic Gardens were created in 1886 and boasts many large well-established plants and trees. The gardens are open every day of the year and are free for visitors. Being in a tropical zone, you will find many rare plants and flora including the giant Amorphophallus Titanum. This amazing flower can weigh up to 70kg. You will see vibrant orchids and a variety of rare plants that many have never seen before. There are various walks available around the gardens with interactive touch screens. There are plenty of shaded areas around the garden where you can enjoy a picnic or some food from the cafe in the gardens. In addition to the over 4,000 plant species, you will also see some colourful butterflies and birds.
