Thinking about going to the UK?

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS WHEN YOU PLAN YOUR UK TRIP

It might seem easy, language is the same, but there are a few things to consider if you want the best buck for your money.

Who will be in your group?
A romantic trip for two?
A family with children?
A large group?

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?

Air transport can be anywhere from $1,200 to $4,000 per person

Getting around, $350-$500 for 14 days of car hire

Hotels average $200 per night, with London at $400

Nutrition, $50-60 per day per person

Entrance fees, $20-50 per attraction, per adult

Edinburgh-Thinking about going to the UK

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE?

A short break, visit 2 cities, maybe London and Edinburgh

Use a main city as a hub to travel 1-2 hours each day

2 weeks or more, try several cities as hubs – London with York and Cardiff

In-depth exploration of a region – Lake District, or Suffolk

SUMMER OR WINTER?

May through mid-September is the summer high season. More expensive but the weather might be fun. Gardens are in bloom and festivals abound.

Winter is mid-October through to March, with short daylight – sunset before 5 pm. Christmas starts in November, with markets and choir concerts

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?

Outdoors and active

Dining and shopping

History

House swap or camping, 5-star hotel

Dress code casual or very very formal

TYPICALLY ENGLISH THINGS TO DO

SUSTENANCE

A FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST

A full English breakfast will set you up for a full day of travel and fun. Sausage, bacon, eggs, black pudding, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, and toast. Not forgetting marmalade and a nice cup of breakfast tea. At the Ritz Hotel, London $84, with Champagne an extra $42 per glass. A more modest location is $23 at a taxi driver’s cafe.

TRADITIONAL ENGLISH SUNDAY LUNCH

Traditional English Sunday lunch. Probably best eaten in a local pub. ‘Sunday roast’ refers to roast beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and vegetables. Other meats such as chicken, lamb, and pork are also popular, and vegetarian options are also available. Roast lunches go best with a pint of locally brewed beer!

AFTERNOON TEA

Afternoon tea is an extravagant option, originating amongst the wealthy social classes in England. It was traditionally eaten at about 4 pm to fill the long gap between lunch and an evening meal, which was served at 8 pm. Today, afternoon tea is a real luxury, served on a three-tiered stand, with finger sandwiches at the bottom, scones, jam and cream in the middle, and small cakes on the top tier. Budget for $160 per head at the Lanesborough Hotel, London, add an extra $40 for a glass of Champagne.

EVENTS

“The Season” is from March through August, covering fabulous events across the arts, horticulture, equestrian, royal, and sports. The London social season evolved in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in its traditional form, it peaked in the 19th century. In modern times in the United Kingdom, “the Season” is known to encompass various prestigious events that take place during the spring and summer. According to The Sloaney magazine’s online guide “Sloaney Season”, it starts with Cheltenham Festival (March), and includes the Grand National (April), The Boat Race (April), Badminton Horse Trials (May), Chelsea Flower Show (May), Epsom Derby (June), Royal Ascot (June), Test matches at Lord’s (July), Wimbledon (July), Henley Royal Regatta (July), Edinburgh International Festival (August) and others, ending with Goodwood Revival (September).
